Discover the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Established by Royal Charter in 1917 the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, then the Imperial War Graves Commission, was given the unenviable task to commemorate in perpetuity those who had died in the service of the British Empire in the Great War. It is this organisation that we have to thank for the beautiful cemeteries and memorials that do just this.

New for 2020, Rifleman Tours has put together a battlefield tour that looks closely at the founding and formation of the CWGC. The tour visits the CWGC visitor centre where we see the artisans and craftsmen at work carrying out their various tasks including the carving of headstones. We also visit the famous cemeteries and memorials that are located on the Western Front that include Tyne Cot, the Menin Gate, the Thiepval Memorial, the Arras Memorial and Cambrai Memorial to name but a few.
