2019 Armistice Remembrance Day in Ypres
Armistice Remembrance Day in Ypres
(Four day tour)
Be part of the Armistice Day Ceremonies on the 11th November 2019 (staying in the centre of Ypres). There is a special commemoration held at the Menin Gate which is relayed to the main square via video link. Join in the Poppy Parade from the main square and attend the ‘Great War Remembered’ concert at Saint Martin’s Cathedral. You can complete this day of remembrance by attending the special Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at 8.00pm that evening.
Day One: Depart by coach from your chosen UK collection point and proceed to the Eurotunnel Terminal at Folkstone where we catch our train to Calais. Upon arrival we proceed to Ypres and book into the Albion Hotel, centrally located close to the Grote Markt and the Menin Gate. The rest of the day is at your leisure when you are free to explore this historic city and enjoy a meal and one of the famous Belgium beers before taking in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate and the atmosphere generated by this special time in Ypres.
Day Two: After a leisurely breakfast we walk through the town to Saint Martin’s Cathedral where, those who wish, can join in the Poppy Parade. Your own, or medals of a relative, can be worn with pride as you walk through the Grote Markt and up to the Menin Gate where we take part in the 11:00am Commemorative Last Post Ceremony. At the end of the ceremony you are free to enjoy this special day and explore this beautiful town at your leisure or stroll back to the hotel (the luxury of actually staying in Ypres) until the ‘Great War Remembered’ concert begins in the afternoon at Saint Martin’s Cathedral (ticket included in the price). At 8:00pm the Last Post Ceremony is sounded under the Menin Gate when the many bands in attendance strike up once again.
Day Three: We will visit Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the World, before touring this battlefield. Then a visit to the Canadian Memorial at Passchendaele which sits on the German strongpoint of Crest Farm and gives commanding views across the slopes leading up to the town. We also visit Essex Farm where Canadian Medical Officer John McCrae wrote the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. More visits will follow finishing with a late lunch at the Hooge Crater Café and Museum (lunch and museum entrance fee included in price). We will then return to Ypres where the rest of the afternoon and evening will be at your leisure.
Day Four: The morning can be spent at your leisure in this historic and beautiful town. Visit the In Flanders Field Museum in the Cloth Hall, walk along the Ramparts or just visit the local chocolate shops. At lunchtime we will then travel back to the Eurotunnel terminal at Calais and our train back to the UK.
